The Grind Begins!

My first night out on the felt as a free man was exciting for some reason. I was amp'ed just to play for a few hours and start to get my poker sense back.

11:30pm-2:00am @ the MGM - $200 Buy-in $1/2 NLHE - Profit: $300

I couldn't have asked for a better table my first night back to the grind. All very timid, except one guy on my left, all very easy to read.

Hands of the night:

Hand 1: 54 of diamonds is what I am holding in middle position 3(MP3 for future reference). A very tight older Asian gentlemen who usually bets ginormous fired $10 preflop and we had 4 people goto the flop. Kd 5h Qs was the flop. Before I get to the action, this guy has always bet close to the entire pot size when he makes a continuation bet on the flop. This time he did not. Big blind checks and now it is up to our preflop raiser. $41 in the pot total, he bets $20. Why was it only $20 when every other hand he has bet would have been closer to $35? He was afraid for one of two reasons I think. A) He had a smaller pocket pair than the tabled Queen. B) He had AQ at best and was just continuing his preflop bet to try and take it down. I went with option A but since I had two people to act behind me I just smooth called this bet and was taking it down on the turn(In my head). A loud mouth gentleman, we will call him our King Shit of the night, called behind me and the others folded. Turn came a 6h, now there is no possible way that card help any of us at all unless one of the other two guys had two hearts in their hand plus a K or Q. The hands aggressor is now up and he CHECKS! HA! If it wasn't for King Shit this hand would be mine quicker than you could imagine the hot Mexican chick next to me naked. I go with my plan and fire $55 into the now $101 pot. King Shit thinks about it but folds after announcing he thinks he just through away his chance at a free $55. You were right King Shit, thanks for folding. Now to save face my Asian friend decides to mull over in his head how many seconds he should waste before folding. He chucks the cards into the muck and tells me nice bet. I do a mental fist pump and we move onto the next hand.

Hand 2: 96 of spades is what I am holding in the Cut off(CO for future references). We have a huge family pot of 7 players to the pot whom all called the big blind of $2. Flop is 9d 5h 6d, smells like victory to me unless somebody is holding 78. So all but one checks to me so I fire $10 into the $14 pot. Have to get the pot growing and find out who may have a diamond draw or the potential disaster of 78. I get two callers. Field thinned and now I have potentially the two hands I thought may be possible starring right at me. Turn card is the 2h. Making two flush draws, a 78 straight, and a now 34 straight possible. I am holding 2 pair? Crap! The man in the big blind fires $15 dollars out into the now $44 pot. The other person folds and it is to me. This bet is small and feels way to defensive so I can't just call and not have a better understanding of where he is on the river card by just calling. I raise him to $50 total. He thinks about it, makes some weird faces, then calls. River is a Ten of clubs(Tc for future references). The guy is first to act and doesn't think very long before firing his entire stack of $83 into the pot and is all-in. At first since I haven't played for awhile my brain is telling me very negative things like he had me beat since the flop and yatta yatta. When I stopped and broke down the hand he could have only had one hand better than me to take this pot from me, T9. The way he played the hand made it clear to me he didn't have me beat any other way. Flop has a flush draw+a possible straight on board, he just called. Turn has two flush draws and two possible straights on board, he bet then called my raise. If he had better than me he would have told me on the turn with all that mess out there. So with the off suited T hitting the river he only had one hand that my brain figured he could have to beat me. I looked at my stack I had $190 left on the table so I would be in ok shape if I called the $83 and lost. Call, he poops his pants, rolls over QT of diamonds and I flip over my 2 pair and take down the pot. So glad I slowed down my brain and figured out the hands instead of just being negative and throwing profit away. HIGH FIVE BRAIN!

So those were my two hands of the night that helped propel me to profit. There was another hand where a very nice gentleman telegraphed to me he had Ax. I had 64 of hearts and I took $85 from him but it was just and easy hand so didn't go into detail about it.

I was supposed to take off a week of poker after leaving my job to get everything situated at home but I got this amazing sensation to go play poker at 11pm on a Sunday. That is why I love this game, I want to play it at the weirdest times :)

Next venture to the casino's is unscheduled. Will play it by feeling for the first week or two then get into a schedule.

Good luck out there,
JB
